How Covid-19 has Benefited Sustainable Fashion
The news may be littered with the doom and gloom of 2020, but there have been some speckles of hope throughout the Pandemic - particularly in the World of Sustainable Fashion
1) Thrift Stores and Handmade Fashion Boom
We’ve either cleared our wardrobe out or replenished it with a trip to the Thrift store, creating a much more sustainable consumer cycle. Also, with money being a finite resource for everyone this year people have been upskilling and experimenting with their own DIY looks – even the fashion houses have been upcycling.
2) Scientific Alternatives
Scientists have developed compostable dresses and algae sequins that produce far less carbon dioxide and in New York they unveiled bio-leather trainers grown in the lab. These kinds of advancements are proving that looking good doesn’t have to cost the planet.
3) A Question of Ethics
We’ve seen a greater focus on holding brands to account for the way they manufacture their products and the amount they pay the people who do it. If consumers are spending more of their dollar on ‘sustainable’ fashion they want it to be equally ethically sourced.
4) Mindset Overhaul
With limited occasions to go out and treat the streets as our own personal catwalk, the world has used the Pandemic to really question whether they ‘Need’ that item – financially or seasonally. There’s been a shift away from cheap fast fashion and a concentration on long-lasting statement pieces to build a forever wardrobe, rather than seasonal.
