Celebrating Black Sustainability in the Arts

We would like to take this time to celebrate and highlight fellow Black Climate Justice Advocates in the Arts.

While the field of sustainability may not be commonly associated with the arts, Black artists have long paved the way for unconventional material useage. Black Artists have also often utilized creativity and platforms to address environmental issues, promote sustainability, and engage with ecological themes. Below are just a few Black artists whose work notably intersects with sustainability:

  1. LaToya Ruby Frazier: Frazier, a photographer and visual artist, often explores environmental justice and the impact of industry on marginalized communities in her work. ( and fellow Pittsburgher!)

  2. Dread Scott: An interdisciplinary artist, Dread Scott has addressed social and environmental issues through various mediums, challenging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths about the world we live in.

  3. Rashid Johnson: Johnson, known for his diverse artistic practice, has engaged with environmental themes and sustainability through installations and sculptures, exploring the intersection of nature and culture.

  4. Lauren Halsey: Halsey, a multidisciplinary artist, incorporates elements of nature and urban environments into her work, often exploring the relationships between communities and their surroundings.

  5. Torkwase Dyson: Dyson, a painter and installation artist, explores the intersection of race and environmental issues, addressing the impact of climate change and the built environment on marginalized communities.

  6. Kené Ijeh: A visual artist and illustrator, Kené Ijeh often incorporates themes of nature, sustainability, and environmental awareness into his artwork and illustrations.

  7. Nari Ward: Known for his large-scale installations, Nari Ward has created artworks that engage with environmental and social issues, using found objects to convey powerful messages about waste and consumption.

  8. Tschabalala Self: While primarily known for her figurative paintings, Tschabalala Self has explored themes related to urban life and the environment, offering a unique perspective on the intersection of humanity and nature.

  9. Aurora Robson: Robson, a multi-media artist, creates intricate sculptures from recycled materials, emphasizing the importance of environmental stewardship and waste reduction.
