The Sustainable Valentines Day Gift Guide

February has slowly crept up and before we've had a chance to get over the holiday madness Valentine's Day is upon us. It’s time for The Sustainable Valentines Day Gift Guide. We know you will be bombarded with articles about how to find that perfect gift. However, it could be time to ditch the traditional products and modernize your day to make an impactful difference this year.

This year we are giving you a gift guide on how to bring sustainability into this often overly commercialized holiday. By actively choosing to incorporate your love for the environment and your love for your partner, you're doubling your gifts.

Reduce Your Waste.

To make a difference, it is important to consider the environmental cost of the gifts you're giving this holiday. There are lots of products that people indulge in for Valentine's Day that are destined for the landfill. Also, gifts heavily comprised of plastic will produce harmful carbon emissions that will increase your carbon footprint. Try to reuse packaging you might have leftover from the holidays. If you don’t have any, invest in a reusable fabric wrap - we’ve got lots of designs here (https://knotzland.com/shopall/fabric-wraps-958mb).

DIY Gifts.

Valentine's Day is about celebrating the love you have for your partner. Without a doubt, there is nothing more special than something that has been crafted from the heart. Consider getting the family involved by asking them their favorite things about your partner and collate them in a scrapbook of your favorite memories. Take the time and energy to craft an alternative gift that they won't forget.

Cook up a Storm.

Chocolates and candies are some of the most purchased items in February. However, the packaging surrounding chocolate is usually non-recyclable and excessive. That doesn't mean you have to abandon your favorite chocolate treats, try making your own versions from recipes online. Also, it can give you the opportunity to create a healthy alternative using locally sourced ingredients.

Crafty Card.

Everyone can remember their first Valentines card, it was probably for your Mom in Kindergarten - covered in glitter and discarded macaroni. Why not rekindle that DIY nostalgia and get creative with the items you already have in the house. If you have any mementos from your time together, this could be your opportunity to center that film stub you've been holding onto. By creating a unique and special work of art you could frame and celebrate all year round.

Shop Independent and Sustainable.

Do your research this Valentine's Day, find a company fighting fast fashion. Look for a company dedicated to sustainability and creating items that will last the test of time. Sometimes spending those extra dollars on one special item that lasts, will be more meaningful every time they use it. Company's that are committed to reducing waste and their carbon emissions take the pressure off you when trying to attain those environmental 2021 goals.

Flower Power

Many people will be sending and receiving flowers this year. However, there could be some environmentally friendly alternatives to reduce your waste this Valentine's Day. Potted plants and flowers can be just as beautiful as cut flowers, and they will last much longer. If you do receive cut flowers, remember they are compostable, and they do not need to go in your general waste. Also, ask your local flourish where these flowers have come from. Some flowers are imported from different countries to meet the demand - the same as the food they contribute to your carbon footprint.  Picking local suppliers will really make a sustainable Valentines.
