5 Sustainable tips for Thanksgiving
**5 tips for a Sustainable Thanksgiving**
1. Some might call this obvious, but do not over purchase food items! Simply by reducing the amount of food we buy this year; we could stop $282 million worth of uneaten turkey from reaching the landfills – which not only helps your wallet but also helps the environment.
2. Check out the local markets and specialty stores. Supporting your local businesses is a great way to actively support your community investing your money in the pockets of the people that make your area special. By shopping those local grocers, you could also be reducing your greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Baste those creative juices. Get the family together and help decorate the home by repurposing things lying around in your own garage. Utilize everything at your fingertips from leaves in the park to old clothes in the back of the closet, upcycling is chic!
4. Controversially, consider a plant-based Turkey alternative, protein sources like lentils, chickpeas and beans create less than half the environmental impact of our feathered friends. If that’s out of the question, reuse and repurpose the meat in things like soups and don’t forget the freezer to keep enjoying it all the way to Christmas.
5. Thanksgiving is at its core about being grateful – why not refocus your celebration around the spirit of appreciation rather than excess. Ditch the disposables or limit everyone to making favorites made with the heart to re-capture that grateful and loving atmosphere that this holiday is really about.
